Solutions for the Future

In order to combat the problem of a high dependency load in the future, the government should begin investing in services for the seniors like retirement homes and caring homes.

To keep the population from dropping further, the government should also consider advertising immigration to Greece from other countries. So far, Greece has been attracting a fair number of immigrants from Central and Eastern Europe, but more would be needed to sustain a population. The immigrants can help with support for the growing elderly population. However, this solution should be integrated after a few years have passed when Greece’s economy has enough time to bounce back into shape.

Also, Greece should consider raising the retirement age by a few years so there are more people working to support the dependent population. This could also help the economy.

Another solution could be the government promoting families that have more than one child. Greece’s economy, despite the blow it took from the recession, is still above average and there shouldn’t be any problems in sustaining more than one child. This way, the population growth can grow instead of decline in the future.

For the problem of males dropping dead, in general, five years before females, governments should also invest in health programs for old men. If hospitals are focused on making sure that old men are also healthy and getting treatments for old age related illnesses, the imbalance between the two genders can become more balanced.
